Engine Overhaul in Davao

by wiskun 24. April 2009 11:24

Just before Kjartan left for Norway, he was anxious to get the engine out to be overhauled. We were recommended a place called "Fred's Machine Shop" which is fairly close to Linmarr Towers.

But first, the challenge of taking the engine apart so it can fit through the companionway without having to break it apart. The following is a series of pictures showing how Kjartan got it through. Very heavy heavy work.

It was lifted down by a mini crane and trucked to Fred's Machine Shop. The guys there seem very professional. They went through the whole engine and gave us a list of all the parts we needed. I think they were thinking of fabricating some of them, but Kjartan didn't want any fabrication done. We ordered all the original parts from UK to be sent to us via DHL. Within days, they sent everything, as per instructions to send direct to Davao. We expected the parts to arrive in 3 business days. Well, that didn't happen. It got stuck in Manila and DHL didn't even bother to inform us that it is sitting in their warehouse awaiting clearance. When I called to enquire, that was the time they told me that it is sitting in the warehouse. Long story short and after so much frustrations, we had to pay somebody to have it cleared out. On top of it all, we also had to pay for the transport fees from Manila to Davao. One of the piston rings was broken upon opening the package. We re-ordered this and instructed to have it sent via Fedex, as we were already pissed off with DHL. The freight charges were more, but I wanted to try Fedex this time. Lo and behold, the package arrived in 3 business days, and straight to Davao. No problems. My conclusion? All DHL deliveries must go through their Manila headquarters. You are at their mercy there and if you don't know anyone in Manila, you will have lots of headaches. As for Fedex, I think the extra charges I paid was because it is delivered straight to DAvao. If I have to send anything over, I will definitely use FEDEX now, even though it costs more. With the money I paid to have the DHL package cleared, Fedex actually ended up cheaper in the end, plus LESS headaches.

The engine is in the machine shop - all done and awaiting for Kjartan's return. The quote they gave us for overhauling the engine was P18k. This is equivalent to approximately US$370.  The parts we ordered cost us close to $2,000 plus all the extra monies paid to DHL. Now come the challenges of putting the engine back into Wiskun.

Louis, if you are reading this, I think the engine is the original one you installed into Wiskun way back in the 1970s.
